The Lake area offers a picturesque setting, blending recreational fun, a retreat from the hustle and bustle, and natural beauty in every season.
Established during the lumbering era, the village of Lake was primarily used as a ‘Whistle Stop’ along the Pere Marquette Railway Line. The old concrete ‘Coal Dock’ (one of only a few left in Michigan), built in the 1930s, stands as a silent testimony to the steam days of train engines. Later, Lake was settled for its beautiful natural surroundings, particularly its abundant waterways.
The village of Lake is situated between two large bodies of water, Perch Lake and Crooked Lake, with the beautiful Eight Point Lake just a few miles west. In summer, the area comes alive with water activities, while winter sees the lakes dotted with the ice shanties of cold-weather anglers. Other nearby lakes in the resort area include Mystic Lake, Crooked Lake, Perch Lake, Gray Lake, Big Mud Lake, Big Cranberry Lake, Bass Lake, Bullhead Lake, Spillway Lake, Three Lakes, Bluff Lake, and Grass Lake.
The Lake Daze Celebration, held at the beginning of summer, is a mix of festival and carnival, offering fun for all ages with old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness entertainment. Activities and entertainment for both adults and children abound making it a great event for the whole family. There are also several resorts and campgrounds in the area.
A fun fact: Lake serves as the Midwest’s home base for the Fraternal Order of Eagles in both Michigan and Canada. Several Boy Scout Camps are also located in the Lake area, including one that was formerly the Harry Bennett Home of Ford Motor Company lore.
