The communities of Leota and Temple are nestled within Michigan’s vast 6.84 million acres of state and national forest land, with the Muskegon River flowing through them. Adventurous visitors will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, ATV/ORV trails, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping, canoeing, and tubing. Birdwatchers will be excited by the prospect of glimpsing the rare endangered Kirtland’s Warbler as they nest in the jack pine stands of Winterfield Township—one of the very few places in the world where these beautiful birds can be found.
In addition to the natural features of the area, vistors will enjoy exploring the Annual Car Show that is held in Leota each summer.
Lake George and Lake, in the southwest corner of Clare County, began as logging towns and have retained much of that essence. They were home to one of Michigan’s first successful logging railroads, the Lake George & Muskegon Railroad. As their names suggest, lakes are central to these communities.
The Green Pine Lake Pathway, accessible from M-115 in the Au Sable State Forest, transverses this area of the county. This non-motorized trail is designed for hiking and cross-country skiing. Hunt for morel mushrooms in the spring and visit this trail during autumn to enjoy the crisp, clean air and spectacular fall colors.
A fun fact: Lake George’s Lincoln Township is home to the Hamlin Field Recreation Area, celebrating long-time resident Luke Hamlin, known as “Hot Potato,” a famous Detroit Tigers pitcher from 1928-1934.
